ROME — In scenes familiar from the television series The Sopranos, the so-called “men of honour” are no longer content to keep their woes within their families, turning instead to their shrinks. A study by Palermo University on the island of Sicily found clinical anxiety in 20 per cent of Mafia relatives and personality disorders in 17 per cent. Dr Girolamo Lo Verso, a psychologist who led the research, said: “Psychiatric problems are steadily rising among the families, a sign that the monolithic culture of Mafia society is crumbling.” His research studied 81 patients linked to Italy’s three main Mafia organisations — Sicily’s Cosa Nostra, the Camorra in Campania and Calabria’s ‘Ndrangheta. “These people are victims of terrible identity crises because they aren’t used to seeing their world view challenged,” said Dr Lo Verso. “That’s why they see a psychiatrist and many say that they feel a lot better after speaking to someone about their problems.” He said that depression and anxiety were the most common problems encountered. ROME — A German tourist was mauled on Tuesday in Sicily by a pack of famished dogs that have already killed a 10-year-old boy. The owner has been arrested for manslaughter. The 24-year-old German womansuffered serious injuries and taken to a hospital in Catania. “Her face was particularly disfigured,” said Mr Christian Ilardi, a rescue official. “Her life is in danger due to the wounds, which are very deep.” AP
